As most interactions do
So here’s the thing I decided to start following people I like the titles of what they wrote or like the content of their articles (Because I only have 3 articles a month, and I have various accounts… so I’ve read about 60 something stories). I’ve decided that I won’t become a Medium paying member until I get deep into writing and become mesmerized by it. I know it’s maybe asking too much, but I’m afraid that if I don’t solidify writing and I have access to ALL of Medium’s articles, I’ll be too distracted to actually write, which would defy the whole purpose of joining Medium in the first place.
So. Basic clarifications made.
Now, Medium confuses me.
I’ve received 6 claps from another user that follows me. I don’t understand what that means. Does it mean she (I assume) really liked my story? Does it mean she wants me to clap at his work? But most importantly, what the hell does she think about such a story? Cause I mean, claps, like likes, aren’t much data to work with.
What specifically did she like about it? The tone? The tempo? What idea did he felt enjoyable? What is it that’s absolutely despicable about such a story? What did she not understand (cause I’m a mess at editing)?
Few days ago I “published” (quotes ’cause pressing a button isn’t that big of a deal) a story saying about how little I cared for those who read me. And don’t get me wrong, I do.
(To the audience, if there’s any). I am not being mean to you, I just don’t know you. Also, I have a limited capacity of care and I have enough human beings in my real life to care and listen and live with. But if you have anything meaningful to add, go for it. (From a previous post)
But I still understand this is sort of a community and somehow requires interaction. And I do not understand how such interaction works.
It’s like, as a kid, you didn’t like to hang out with your neighbors, but you still need to know how to talk to them. You still need to know that if you don’t wave back they will be mad at you. And you might not want to hang out with them, but you also don’t want to make them feel ignored or badly treated, you want to just be nice. But you don’t know what to do when they wave, or when they say hi, you froze.
Well, that’s me in Medium. I don’t know how am I supposed to answer politely, what does every interaction mean, I do not know.
So if you do, please, please, explain it to me cause I’m as LOST as one can be.
And also, I wonder, am I “allowed” (like socially) to be in this platform just to create and not to consume (at least for now)? Is that okay? Or is this unethical?
It’s like if I’m a brand and I use Instagram to promote it, but I don’t allow Instagram to take over my hours. This will be considered “smart”, but is it really? Or is it just despicable because you are creating tools for other’s torture? (I’m under Cal Newport’s influence, don’t worry it will eventually fade).
And also, Medium works because there’s a bunch of paying members but not soo many creators (or maybe not, this is just an assumption), would such only-consuming members compensate my only-producing dynamic? I just really need some clarification, cause this confusion is absolutely unbearable.
And it might seem like a joke, I assure you it’s absolutely not.
